Abstract

This study was conducted during the period from 1 991 to 1997,in the resea rch farm, g reenhouse and le boratories of the Genetics Department , Facult y of 1\ gricu llurc, /\in Sha ms University and Fiber Cro ps Research Deparlmcnl, Field C rops lnslilule, Agri cullura l Research Center. The study wes aimed al cv
A- Prcliminaa•y Experiments:

Twenty-six local aJI(I imported nax genotypes were evaluated at dirTerenl stages, i.e. germination stage, vegcte tive stage (60-days) and at maturity. Results reveal ed that genotypes varied i n thei r response to salt stress and that 6000 ppm NaCI could be used to lest for salt tolerance in lla x.

B- Ficltl lxpcl'im cul :

Dased on the results obtained frorn the preliminary experiments, si x genot ypes were selected incl uding the three most sensiti ve genot y pes; Gi za 6, I05/2 and 24 1 9/1 a nd the three 1110sl tolera nt genot ypes; 1 62/J, G i za 4 and Gi za 8 lo be includ ed in a cornplcle dia llcl crossing program

1he results Revealed 11wt:

l- The genotypes exhibited si gnifica nt differences fo r the four, agronomic traits among the si x genot ypes.

2- Strain 1 62/3 proved to be a good co mbiner, where all the hybr ids which had S. 1 62/3 as one of their parents exceeded the other parent in volved in the cross but never reached S. 1 62/3 except the hybrid S. l OS/2
