Abstract


Endoscopic variceal sclerotherapy has been used with increasing frequency in the management of oesphageal varices either bleeding 0. V or long term decompression of non bleeding varices, However, this procedure was reported to be associated with a variety of complication, one of this is bacterial peritonitis following injection sclerathrapy.

The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of bacterial peritonitis after emergency sclerotherapy for variceal haemorrhage.

The study was conducted on 50 patient; 35 male and 15 female who are adni.itted to Tanta University emergency Hospital from september
2001 to April 2002. All Pts presented by Heametemsis and or Melena

and had the diagnosis of liver cirrhosis, and significant ascites.


The patients were studied prospectively to determine the incidence of Bacterial peritonitis following emergency endoscopic variceal sclerotherapy.
