THE MUTAGENIC EFFECT OF SOME CHEMICAL FERTILIZERS ON Allium cepa AND Viciafaba PLANTS

Hanaa El-Awady Mohamed Aly;

Abstract

Three fertilizers were studied ( urea, ammonium sulfate and calcium nitrate ) on the process of mitoses in Allium cepa root tips, the process of meioses in Vicia Jaba flower buds, and on the storage protein of the M2
Vicia faba seeds. A combined treatment between urea and hinosan
fungicide on mitoses of Allium cepa root tips was also studied.

The different concentrations of the three fertilizers used induced non significant increase in MI of mitoses. They also induced low frequency of abnormal cells in both mitotic and meiotic divisions, especially with the recommended doses for field application.

The combined treatment showed that both fertilizer and fungicide were antagonizing their effects on both mitotic activities and mitotic abnormalities.

Changes in protein band intensity and mobility were recorded as compared with the control.
