Abstract


Obesity is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by an excess of body fat (Forbes, 1987). Obesity is rapidly becoming a major health issue in modern society. Obese elderly has an increased risk of developing diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia and arthritis (Goldstein, 1992).

This thesis is conducted to study the prevalence of overweight and obesity and their role as risk factor in developing some diseases. A cross-sectional study was performed using a random sample of elderly 60 years old and over, collected from 6 nursing homes in Cairo.

One hundred and thirty elderly were subjected to full clinical assessment, measurement of body mass index, waist/hipratio and skin fold thickness and laboratory investigations, including fasting blood sugar, serum cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C and triglyceride.

Over weight and obesity defined by WHO (1997)
according to body mass index as follow:

Over weight= 25-29.9 kg/m2•
Obesity> 30 kg/m2 •


The study showed that the prevalence of overweight and obesity were 23.8% and 46.2% respectively, and both ofthem were more prevalent in females than males.
