MASTICATION AND SPEECH CONSIDERATIONS IN PROSTHODONTIC REHABILITATION OF PARTIAL GLOSSECTOMY PATIENTS

Abstract
Partial glossectomy is a surgical treatment of the tongue cancer, which is leading to lack of tongue palatal contact that is essential for normal deglutition, mastication and speech.
In this study palatal augmentation prosthesis was constructed for the purpose of lowering and reshaping of the palate to permit contact of
' the remaining portion of the tongue with the palatal prosthesis during speech and mastication in order to improve these functions.
For this study ten patients with partial glossectomy and unilateral alveolectomy were selected. Each patient received palatal augmentation prosthesis retained by • wrought wire clasps and mandibular partial denture that restored the missing lower teeth and supporting structures.
The effect of the palatal augmentation prosthesis and mandibular partial denture on speech and mastication has been evaluated 1, 3 and
6 months after insertion of the prostheses.
The mastication was evaluated by assessment of the masticatory performance by using the Computer- image analysis method.
