"Effect of bone marrow-derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells on Ischemic-reperfused Hearts in Adult Rats with Established Chronic Kidney Disease"
Arwa Abd elmoniem Hassan Ali;
Abstract
Background:Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major health care problem with a rapidly increasing prevalence.Cardiovascular diseases are highly prevalent in patients with CKD and represent the major cause for mortality (Su et al., 2014). This interplay between kidney and heart dysfunction is known as cardio-renal syndrome.
Aims:Therefore, the current study was planned to detect the ability of bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells to improve kidney functions and cardiac functions following ischemia and reperfusion, in adult rats with established chronic kidney disease.
Mythology: The present study was performed on 45 albino adult female rats weighing 160-200 grams at the start of the study. Rats were purchased fromVacsera Animal House (Helwan) and were kept in the Animal House, Physiology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University under standard conditions of boarding throughout the whole period of the study.
Results:The results encountered in the present study, illustrate the effect of bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells on both renal and cardiac functions following cardiac ischemia and reperfusion, in adult rats with established chronic kidney disease. In addition, histological examination of cardiac and kidney tissue sections was performed.
Conclusion:It could, thus, be concluded that stem cells with more focus on bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells have strong therapeutic potential as they succeeded to improve chronic kidney disease progression, evidenced by decreased plasma creatinine and urea and blood pressure levels. Also they can improve cardiac electrophysiological and inotropic functions either the systolic or the diastolic. This concurred with our histopathological results which reveal regain of relatively normal renal and cardiac morphology.
