Sealability and Healing Potentiality of Two Different Root-End Filling Materials

Mohamed Nabeel Ahmed Hashem;

Abstract

The sealing ability and biocompatibility of two different root-end filling materials were evaluated. The tested materials were: MTA (Dentsply/Tulsa Dental, Tulsa, OK) and Biodentine (Septodont, Saint Maur des Fausses, France). The study was divided into two parts; in vitro part to evaluate the sealing ability and in vivo (animal) part to assess biocompatibility.
In the in vitro part of the study, twenty extracted human maxillary anterior teeth were selected. Teeth were decontaminated then cleaned and scaled to remove any surface deposits and/or calculus. All teeth were cleaned and shaped by using the step-back method. Obturation was done using gutta-percha and AH26 sealer utilizing the lateral condensation technique. Resection of 3 mm of the apical end of each root was done at a 90 degrees angle to the long axis of the root. Root-end cavity preparation was prepared in each sample ultrasonically. Root-end cavity preparations were filled with the tested materials mixed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The sealing ability of the tested materials was measured using the fluid filtration method. Collected data were represented as the mean values of apical leakage and standard deviations for MTA and Biodentine at different test periods. All data were tabulated and subjected to statistical analysis.
