HISTOPATHOLOGICAL, ULTRASTRUCTURAL AND IMMUNOHISTOCHEMCAL STUDY OF ASTROCYTOMAS

Noha Mohamed Ragab;

Abstract

Astrocytomas are the most common group of primary intracranial tumours and result from the malignant transformation of the astrocytes which are the largest and most numerous of all glial elements.

Th1s study was conducted on 30 cases of astrocytomas (three cases were grade I, 6 we•re grade n,•
!2 were grade III, while 9 cases were grade IV) with a male to female ratio of 2•: I.

The electron microscope is at present one of the tools which contribute to the diagnosis of tumours as it
•facilitates the clear visualisation of the changes in the substructure of the cell.

The nuclei of the tumour cells were eccentric, of variable s1zes with multiple chromoccntres, coarse chromatin and prominent nucleoli, which arc signs of actively dividing neoplastic cells.
