CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND RESPONSE TO CHEMOTHERAPY IN PEDIATRIC BURKITT'S LYMPHOMA IN EGYPT: A COMPARATIVE RETROSPECTIVE STUDY

Mohamed Ali Abol Ela;

Abstract

Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas are a group of heterogeneous
malignancies of the same cell of origin.
.
Burkitt's lymphoma represents about 35 % of all non
Hodgkin's lymphomas in Egyptian children according to a recent study done in the pathology department in the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Cairo University in the 90s.

The treatment modality in Burkitt's lymphoma has changed markedly over the last five decades.

This study entails clinico-epidemiological analysis of all cases of Burkitt's lymphoma in the NCI -Cairo in the period between January 1991 and December 1999 as regards the clinical• presentation and the response to treatment through one of two different chemotherapy protocols.

The data obtained showed that the two studied protocols gave nearly the same results including the overall survival (OS) and the event-free survival (EFS).
