AETIOLOGICAL BACKGROUND OF NON - ORGANIC VOICE DISORDERS

Abstract


Voice problems in the absence of identifiable structural or neurological pathology are commonly labeled non-organic (functional) voice disorders. There are several factors which may be influencing in the production of these disorders. These factors include physiological, pathological, psychological and behviroal disturbances. This study was conducted on two groups of subjecs, group I included 100 patients diagnosed as non-organic voice disorders and group II included 50 normal individuals (control group).

In order to clarify the aetiological background of this clinical entity. Both groups were subjected to voice assessment protocol and psychiatric evaluation. This evaluation was done usrng:
• Holmes and Rahe (1967) for estimation of the presence of stressful life events preceding the onset of voice disturbance.
• Symptom checklist (SCL, EL-Behary, 1984) for assessment of psychiatric symptoms.
• Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI, WHO, 1993) to confirm the presence of the psychiatric symptoms.
