Abstract

Supracondylar femoral fractures provide therapeutic. challenges to even the most experienced trauma surgeons. Although surgical treatment is now recommended for most of the supracondylar femoral fractures, controversy remains regarding the optimum fixation device.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the results of treatment of these fractures by the condylar buttre .; plate . The material of this study included 23 patiens with supracondylar fractures of the femur' treated in Tanta Univesity Hospital between June 2003 Decamber 2004 all patiens were fixed by the conylar buttress plate.

The age incidence ranged from twenty-one to sixty-nine years with an average of 48.2 years. There were 15 males and 8 females. The right side was affected in 9 patiens and the left side in 15 patiens.

15 fractures occurred as a result of high-energy trauma while 8 fractures occurred as a result of low-energy trauma. According to the AO-ASIF classification 9 cases in this series had type A-fracture (60.87%) and 14 cases had type C-fracture (39.13%) Four cases had associated injuries.

The were no associated vascular or nerve injuries in any of the cases of this series.
All patiens in this study were subjected to initial clinical and radiological examination. Fractures were initially manipulated under general anaesthesia and placed in Thomas traction while the patient was prepared for operative interference. The time lag before surgery ws in the average 10.12 days.
