Determination of Radionuclide Ratios for Limiting the Alteration grades in Different Rock Types, Southwestern Sinai, Egypt
Aya Mohamed Mohamed Zaghloul Ahmed;
Abstract
The aim of the present work is to use the natural fractionation of the uranium, thorium, actinium series and potasium-40 in sedimentary samples to interpret and discriminate between the different alteration grades and time in different rock types at southwestern Sinai, Egypt. For this purpose, twenty six sedimentary samples represent shall, sandstone, siltstone and claystone from four different localities; El-Qur, Gabal Homeirat, Gabal Homyer and Gabal Allouga, were analyzed using a high purity germanium (HPGe) detector.
It was found that the average activity concentration values of (_^238)U are approximately 42, 34, and 50 times the world average value at EL-Qur, Gabal Homeirat, and Gabal Homyer localities, respectively. As for the fourth locality; Gabal Allouga, the average activity concentration value of (_^238)U is nearly two hundred and twenty times the world average value. (_^232)Th average activity concentration values for Gabal Homeirat and Gabal Homyer localities are less than the world average activity concentration value while it is nearly twice the world average value for El-Qur and Gabal Allouga localities.
Average activity concentrations of the radionuclides at EL-Qur, Gabal Homeirat and Gabal Allouga localities increase according to the order (_^238)U ˃ (_^40)K ˃(_^232)Th , while at Gabal Homyer increases according to the order (_^238)U ˃ (_^232)Th ˃ (_^40)K.
The migration out of uranium from G. Allouga to the east in both G.Homyer and G.Homeriat and to the west to El-Qur locality indicated to the most probable situation in the last alteration process.
The dependence of alteration processes grades on the ratio (_^226)Ra⁄(_^238)U was also investigated given that:
(_^226)Ra⁄(_^238)U values were ˂ o.8, 0.8:1.2, 1.3:2 and ˃ 2 corresponding to grades; I-1, I, I+1 and I+2 respectively.
The most of the samples (14 samples) of Grade (I) express that there is no migration in or out for uranium.
The uranium migration was recorded for other 12 samples.
