STUDIES ON THE SUTTABILITY OF WATER RESOURCES IN SIWA OASIS, EGYPT FOR AGRICULTURAL USES

ABDELHAFID ABDELRAHMAN MOSSA;

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the suitability of the different water resources in Siwa Oasis for agricultural purposes using different methods.

Siwa Oasis is considered one of the most important depression in the Western Desert of Egypt. It is about 300 km Southwest of Marsa Matrouh and about 65 km east of the border between Egypt and Libya. The only source of water for irrigation is ground water that flows from many springs and shallow wells spreading all over the depression. This ground water is of a limited quality by usual standards. The cultivated area m 1978 was about 2300 feddan and jumped up to about 9000 feddan m 1988. New development and exploitation of water resources encourage people to reclaim new land. It is necessary to carry out studies in order to check the water quality changes in connection with the planned development.

Water samples are collected from 55 different locations and sources. These sources are: 27 springs, 12 wells, 12 drains and 4 lakes. The water samples were collected in plastic bottles arid transported to the laboratory immediately for chemical determinations. The water samples were analyzed and evaluated for agricultural uses. Also, the management of the low water quality was discussed.
