Serum 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D in Pre-pubertal children with Isolated Growth Hormone Deficiency

Rehab Fawzy AbdElMohsen Soliman;

Abstract

P
revious studies demonstrated that GH treatment alone in cases of GHD is unable to fully restore the bone mass and density to normal levels.
Vitamin D is essential for skeletal growth and, to date, there are no current definitive prevalence estimates available for vitamin D status in GHD children and data about the effect of GH and IGF1 on vitamin D in GHD children are controversial.
Thus, the aim of our work was to asses serum 25 (OH) vitamin D status in prepubertal IGHD children and its relation to various auxological parameters.
This study was conducted on 50 Egyptian prepubertal IGHD patients (23 females and 27 males), their ages ranged between 2.6 – 10 years, with a mean ±SD of 7.81 ± 2.6 years. They were recruit¬ed from the Pediatric Endocrinology Clinic, Nile Hospital, Health Insurance, Cairo, Egypt during the period from November 2014 to May 2015. Patients were compared to 38 healthy age, sex and pubertal stage-matched Egyptian sub¬jects serving as controls, (14 females and 24 males), whose ages ranged between 3 - 10 years, with a mean ±SD of 7.76 ± 2.47 years, recruited from the outpatient clinic of the same hospital during the same period, their samples were collected after resolving of acute illness and deficient controls were excluded..
