"SOME CHEMICAL STUDIES ON LOCAL BASE OILS PRODUCED BY DIFFERENT REFNERIES"

Abstract

It is well !mown that distill ation of crude oil under atm osph eric pressure removes the gasoline, kerosene and distillate fuel components, leaving a long residue containing lube oi l a nd asphalt. Further distillation under vacuum yields neutral distillates and an asphalt residue. These neutral distillates are treated with some fonns of solvent extraction to convert them into low viscosity index stocks or high viscosity index stocks. Wax is then removed by dissolving the oil on methyl ethyl ketone a nd after that the oils may be finished with hydrogen to rem ove s ulfur, nitrogen and color bodies. Because of the wide differences in crude oil, wide differences in the resulting stocks occur, a nd thus not all the base oils have similar physical and chemical propetiies or provide equivalent petformance.

Accordingly this study aimed to detect the relation between chemical composition of base oil stocks and their physical, chemical and petfonnance properties.
