Conservative Therapy of Anterior Disk Displacement of the Temporomandibular Joint
Mona Mohsen M. Zahran;
Abstract
This research was conducted on seventy-four (N=74) patients who were suffering from pain in the temporomandibular joint region, and limitation in the mouth opening. The patients were subdivided into two groups according to the type of occlusal splint:
First group: included thirty-eight (N=38) patients upon onset of therapy with an acrylic centric occlusal splint.
Second group: included thirty-six (N=36) patients upon onset of therapy with an acrylic distraction splint.
Aim of Research :
1. Diagnosis of anterior disk displacement (ADD) without reduction of the temporomandibular joint using magnetic resonance imaging.
2. Determination of the factors relevant to conservative therapy of anterior disk displacement (ADD) of the temporomandibular joint.
3. Comparison of the effect of two types of occlusal splints on the extent of mouth opening, and the effect of the therapy on the patients during a follow-up period of twelve months.
Methods of Research :
1. The results of the clinical examination of both temporomandibular joints, masticatory muscles, and teeth were registered, based on which an initial diagnosis was made. Additionally, the patients determined the extent of their suffering from pain and functional limitation on the Visual Analog Scale.
2. The temporomandibular joint with its disk was imaged on both sides using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the closed and open mouth positions to confirm the clinical diagnosis.
3. The extent of the mouth opemng and mandibular protrusion were measured usmg computerized axiography.
