A radiological, light, and electron microscopy study of the ossification process within the thyroid cartilage and hyoid bone synchondrosis

Mohammad Abd-El-Mohssen Hashim Mohammad;

Abstract

The process of ossification of the thyroid cartilage was studied in specimens obtained from 174 male and 97 female subjects aged from 1 to 97 years. Also the process of ossification of the hyoid bone synch_ondrosis was studiPd in specimens obtained from 194 male and 109 female subjects aged 7 months to 89 years.
Radiological, histological, and electron microscopy techniques were used in this study. Different histological stains were used to di'ferentiate areas of calcification and ossification to confirm the radiological results.
Radiological examination revealed areas of calcification and ossification. Ossification commenced in the thyroid cartilage lamina at the lower posterior triangle in males at the age of 15 years, and at 20 years in females. The process of further spread of ossification then differed in the two sexes. In males, o sification spread firstly around the periphery of the lamina, and then invaded the centre of the lamina. In females, ossification spread radially in an antero-superior direction from its origin across the whole thyroid lamina.
Areas of calcification were frequently observed in the female thyroid cartilage whereas they were of rare occurrence in the male. Complete ossification of the male thyroid cartilage was observed in a number of middle aged to elderly males. There was only one case of complete ossification found in the female specimens.
The percentage of thyroid cartilage ossification increased with advancing age in both sexes but was highly variable.
Histologically, the process of ossification m the thyroid cartilage was not typical of that found in endochondral ossification at the epiphyseal growth cartilage of long bones, rather it was a degenerative process that occurred with advancing age. The process of ossification appeared to be irregular in its activity and was asymmetrical as it tended to progress more rapidly on one side of the cartilage
lamina than on the other.
