Abstract

Hepatic encephalopathy is a common complication affecting patients with cirrhosis. Several theories have been proposed to explain the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy, one of which is elevated blood ammonia level. Several studies have been done to assess the contribution of Helicobacter pylori infection in the hyperammonaemia associated with hepatic encephalopathy in cirrhotic patients. Yet, it has not been fully clarified.

The present work was performed to study the relation between Helicobacter pylori infection and serum ammonia level in patients with hepatic encephalopathy.

The current work was conducted on forty five patients divided into two groups:
Group I: 30 cirrhotic patients with hepatic encephalopathy, including

H.pylori positive and H. pylori negative patients.

Group II: 15 control subjects without history of liver disease and having dyspeptic symptoms, including H.pylori positive and H.pylori negative patients.

They were randomly selected from attendance and i11patient of Internal Medicine Department, Medical Research Institute, Alexandria University.
