J
uvenileIdiopathicArthritisisthemostfrequentchronicrheumaticdiseaseinchildhood.MASisacomplicationofJIAwithelevatedmorbidityandmortality.
MASappearstooccurwithvaryingdegreesofseverity,rangingfromthehighlymorbidchildwithpersistenthighgradefever,hepatosplenomegaly,bleedingtendency,andCNSmanifestations.Laboratoryparametersshowingpancytopenia,coagulopathy,hepatic,andrenaldisorderstotheunwellchildwithpersistentfever,noorganomegaly,arelativedropinbloodcellcounting,andmildcoagulopathy.
Earlyrecognition,differentiationfromactivityoftheJIAitselfandtherapidintroductionofaggressivetreatmentcontributetobetterprognosis.TheprogressinunderstandingthepathophysiologybehindMASandidentificationofthepathwaysassociatedwiththeearlystagesofthissyndromecandevelopnewbiomarkersandtreatmentofMAS.
TheaimofthisstudyistoinvestigatethepresenceofmacrophageactivationsyndromeamongJIApatientstoassesstheextentoftheprobleminthosepatients.WeincludedinourstudyonehundredJIApatientsregisteredinpediatricdepartmentsovertheprevious2years.DiagnosisofMASwasdoneaccordingtopreliminarydiagnosticguidelinesforMAScomplicatingJIA.
