Abstract


This study was designed to clarify the various methods or diagnosis of various types of dementias as well as to identify the various risk factors, clinical features, neuropsychological criteria and neuro-radiological findings of vascular dementia.


The present study included I 00 patients with cognitive deficit with age above 60 years and 40 normal control group for those fulfilling the criteria of vascular dementia.


All patients and control persons in this study were subjected to the following:
I. Thorough history taking, general clinical examination,
neurological examination, neurovascular examination and routine laboratory investigations.
2. Clinical and neuropsychological rating scales including:
(a) Mini-Mental State Examination test.
(b) Scales for diagnosis of type of dementia using: DSM-IV for Alzheimer dementia.
• DSM-IV for vascular dementia.
. Hachinski ischemic scale.
(c) Scales for diagnosis of degree of dementia:
• ADDTC scale
• NINCDs-ADRDA scale
(d) Scales for assessment of specific aspects in dementia:
