Abstract
The genus Salsola, family Chenopodiaceae (Goosefoot family) consists of over I 00 species found in the dried parts of Asia, Europe and Africa (Woldu et at., 1990 and El-Hadidi et at.,
1995). SalsolaspeCies are represented in Egypt by sixteen species (El-Hadidi et at., 1995, Boulos, 1995) S. cyc/ophylla Bakerin Bull., S. gaetula (Maire) Botsch, S. imbricata Forsskal • Sinermis Forsskal, S. incanescens C.A. Mey in Eichw., S. kali L., S longifolia Forsskal, S. oppositifolia Desf, S. orienta/is S.G. gmelin, S. spinescens Moq., S.schweinfurthii Solms Laub., S.sinaica. S. tetragona Delile, S.tetrandra Forsskal., S. villosa Schult and S. volkensii schweinf and Asch., represent the most common species grown in the Egyptian deserts (Tackltolm,
1956). Some Salsola species are reputed for treatment of hypertension (Krylov et at., 1962) and were introduced in the USSR Phatrnacopoeia (Rizaev eta/., 1967).
