GEOPHYSICAL STUDIES ON THE NORTH WESTERN OF THE HIGH DAM LAKE FOR DELINEATING ITS SUBSURFACE STRUCTURES

Anwar Hassan Aluned Radwan;

Abstract

Nowadays, because of the occurrence of the earthquake of
November 14, 1981 of magnitude 5.5 at Kalabsha area, 70 km to the southwest of Aswan city and the continuation of the earthquakes till now, the area to the northwest of the Lake Nasser was considered to be one of the most important areas from the tectonic point of view. These earthquake events were considered to be a very important events, as it were very close to the High Dam. For the importance of the High Dam for the Egyptian economy and developments, a research program has been effectively initiated for studying the geodynamics and new tectonics of the
area.
This program involved monitoring seismicity, monitoring crustal movements, mapping subsurface structures and underground water behavior. For the purpose of monitoring earthquake activity continuously around the Lake Nasser, a radio-telemetry network of 13 seismic stations were established around the northwestern part of the Lake Nasser. In additions,• for the monitoring crustal movements around the northern part of the Lake, several local geodetic networks (4 networks) and regional geodetic network were established around parts of active faults. The relationship between the hydrological regime of the underground water and the earthquake activity in the area around the Lake was a very important task in this program. Therefo.re, a radio-telemetry network of piezzometer stations were established around the northern part of the Lake Nasser.
Studying the subsurface geologic structures and the basement
configurations are another significant item of the research program.
