Abstract


Back ground: The antioxidant effect of Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn (H sabdariffa) was shown in previous studies. And has been used in traditional folk medicines. Acetaminophen (AAP Paracetamol) is the most common drug used as analgesic and antipyretic. It can induce oxidative stress which can cause cell death.
Aim of study: The role of Hibiscus extract in decelerating the effect of Acetaminophen on submandibular salivary gland of rats was evaluated.
Materials and methods: Forty five adult male albino rats were used, divided into control and experimental groups. The control groups was divided into 3Sub groups: Sub Group (a), (b), (c).The experimental group were further subdivided into three subgroups: The sub group (1) received orally 350mg/kg (AAP) once daily for 4 weeks; sub group (2) received 350mg/kg (AAP) orally once daily along with (HS) oral intake 200mg/kg for 4weeks, subgroup (3) which received 350mg/kg (AAP) orally once daily for first week then the rats were administered 200mg/kg (HS) orally for second week along with continued (AAP) administration for the next 2 weeks.
