Effect Of The Capsule-Bending Ring On Posterior Capsular Opacification

Hoda Taha El-Shiwy;

Abstract

PCO is still a major complication of modern cataract surgery. Recently, it was concluded that the creation of a discontinuous sharp bend in the capsule by the sharp edged PMMA capsule-bending ring (CBR), leads to inhibition of LECs migration and decrease in incidence of PCO. In this study. the results showed that no opacification occurred in any of the eyes with the CBR implanted before the implantation of a single piece PMMA IOL (after phacoemulsification and bimanual irrigation/ aspiration through 2 corneal stab incisions) while 6 eyes (20%)of those without the CBR implantation and who had cataract extr ction by the same technique and implantation of the same type of IOL had opacified posterior capsules. It was concluded that the reduction in the rate of PCO was due to the inhibition of LECs migration at the sharp bend in the capsule created by the CBR.
