Predicting Dementia After Stroke

Abstract


Dementia affects cognitive functions and affected people need special care. Stroke is a disabling problem in itself. While post stroke dementia is an additional disability.
Preventive measures are best to be taken is such condition. Therefore, an updated study for assessment of variables assumed to predict dementia after stroke is needed.
This observational follow up study included 100 patients of first ever ischemic stroke admitted in stroke units in Ain Shams University Hospitals.
Designed sheet, collecting data about age, sex, years of education hypertension, diabetes mellitus, heart diseases, smoking and imaging, obtained from medical records. Physical activity the year before stroke onset assessed by GPAQ. Language proficiency and experience assessed by BLP. Mini mental state examination used to asses' cognitive status at stroke onset and 3 months after stroke.
