Assessment of Hyaluronic Acid Carrier with Xenogenic Cancellous Bone for Maxillary Sinus Augmentation: A Clinical Study

Rehab Ahmed Ali AbdAllah Soliman;

Abstract

The maxillary sinus is of particular concern when implant treatment is considered for posteriorly edentulous cases. The pneumatization of these sinuses often minimizes or completely eliminates vertical bone availability for implants. Sinus lifting techniques were introduced to overcome the lack of alveolar bone height, via lateral or crestal approaches, solving those limitations.

The aim of this present study was to assess clinically, radiographically and histologically the effect of (HA) on the remodelling and transformation of xenograft into new bone during maxillary sinus augmentation.

The study has been conducted on 20 maxillary sinuses. They were divided randomly into two groups, Group A as a control group, in which all sinuses has been augmented by xenograft and Group B as a study group, in which all sinuses has been augmented by a mixture of hyaluronic acid and xenograft. All sinuses enrolled in this study have been augmented through the lateral antrostomy approach.

After 6 months, postoperative crestal bone heights measurements were done for all augmented sinuses using CBCT. Planmeca Romexis software was used to superimpose preoperative and postoperative CBCT scans. Based on this technique, the crestal bone heights gained after augmentation were measured and accurate statistical comparison between the two groups was achieved. Group A, the mean gain in bone height was (10.61mm±2.6) while in Group B; the mean gain in bone height was (11.74mm±1.65).
