Abstract


The present study is divided into two sections, the first deals with the preparation of Schiff bases and their complexes with different oxidation states of the ruthenium metal. The ligand (H2L1) was obtained by condensation of, o-phenylenediamine with salicylaldehyde. The other ligand (H2L2) (R,R)-(−)-N,N′-Bis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediamine was purchased. The ligands and their complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TGA, UV-VIS and ESR. The analytical spectra and magnetic data support the mononuclear formations of these complexes with octahedral structures.
The second section deals with implementing the prepared complexes as ionophores in polymeric membrane electrodes, as well as fully determining the performance characteristics of the fabricated electrodes. The optimum membrane composition was found to be [Ru(III)-H2L2] 1%, o-NPOE(33%), PVC (66%). This membrane was found ideal for the determination of iodide ions in solution; consequently, it was fully characterized, validated for application by undergoing a silver nitrate titration, and finally used to determine the free iodide ions as well as iodine in a commercial iodine sample.
