Anesthesia For Spinal Surgery
Sameh Gamil Aziz;
Abstract
Surgical procedures performed on the spine account for the majority of neurosurgical procedures in a typical anesthesiologist's practice.
The vertebral column forms the central axis of the •skeleton. It supports the head and the trunk on the pelvis and it gives great protection to the spinal cord from external violence. The vertebral column is formed of thirty-three vertebrae with their intervertebral discs, ligaments and muscles attached to them.
The pathological conditions that affect the vertebral column may be traumatic, degenerative diseases, tumors or deformities.
Preoperative evaluation is necessary and it should include history, physical examination, neurological evaluation, pulmonary function tests, hemodynamic state, history of medical diseases and history of other operations.
