The proaggregating and potentiating effect of unfractionated and low molecular weight heparin on platelets of the critically ill patients
Mohamad Hossny Abdalla;
Abstract
Heparin has been widely used in the prevention and treatment of
various thromboembolic disorders for many years, and is considered to be a relatively safe drug. However, a small but significant number of patients receiving heparin develop thrombocytopenia and are at risk for associated complications. Recent studies suggest that the frequency of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is approximately three per cent with unfractionated heparin (Chong et al; 1995).
The aim of this work is to evaluate the incidence of HIT in eighty critical patients receiving different types of heparin (LMWH & UFH) and we also studied the presence of heparin PF4 IgG in the serum of these patients and correlate them to the development of thrombocytopenia.
This study was conducted on eigh!;l patients presenting to the Intensive Care Department. Kasr El Aini-Hospital Faculty of Medicine Cairo University.
The patients were randomized into one of the following two groups: -
Group I: Fourty patients 23 males and 17 females who received
L.W.M.H. with mean age of 51 ± 15 years.
Group II: Fourty patients 22 males and 18 females who received
U.F.H. with mean age of51.9 ±.12.9 years.
