Abstract


Malignant neoplasms are in fact becoming an important health problem in developing countries, especially with the progressive decline of infections and nutritional diseases.

The present study was conducted to reveal the pattern of different gastrointestinal malignant neoplasms in Alexandria in the last decade (1987-1996) and to identify some epidemiological features of cases having various types of gastrointestinal malignant neoplasms. In order to accomplish these aims, all cases of gastrointestinal malignant neoplasms registered in Alexandria Main University Hospital in the last decade were included' in the study. Data available for these cases were age, sex, residence and diagnosis, coded according to the lCD, the I Oth edition. Moreover, in order to reveal various predisposing factors of gastrointestinal malignant neoplasms the sociodemographic profile and medical aspects of cases attending the department of clinical Oncology and Nuclear Medicine in Alexandria Main University and Gamal Abd­ Elnaser Hospitals from January to June, 1997 were included in the study.

Case control study was adopted, the control group was matched by age and sex and was taken from the opthalmic and dental out-patient clinics of both Alexandria Main University and Gamal Abd-Elnaser Hospitals. Data were collected usmg a specially designed questionnaire. The collected data were tabulated and statistically, analyzed where the following results were obtained:

I. The registered cases in the last decade (1987-1996) totaled 2184 cases, 58.6% were males and 41.4% were females.
