High frequency ultrasound for evaluation of swellings of the wrist and hand

Mohamed Nabil Mohamed;

Abstract

US is a promising modality in the evaluation of musculoskeletal lesions. The wrist & hand are one of the important regions in this field.
The aim of this work is to demonstrate the role of US in the diagnosis of

wrist & 11and swellings & to what extent it can replace MRI in this domain.

Swellings of the wrist & hand were classified into 4 categories namely neoplastic, inftammatory, traumatic & miscellaneous.
Thirty five cases with wrist swellings were examined by US with X-ray, MRI , CT & even isotopic scan done in selected cases according to clinical suspicion. Fina! diagnosis was reached by surgical, histopathological or laboratory findings
The results obtained were discussed regarding the sonographic findings compared to other imaging modalities & correlated to final diagnosis to find out the value of US in each category.
We concluded that US is an effective modality which can replace MRI in a large proportion of cases of swellings of the wrist & hand because of its reasonable ability to detect soft tissue details with economized use of time, finance & personnel & with more comfort to the patient.
