Influence of Gamma Aminobutyric Acid on Some Biochemical Alterations in Irradiated and Streptozotocin Treated Rats

Ahmed Sayed Hammad Mohamed;

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the role
of GABA in insulin level, some metabolic disorders and
oxidative stress in the pancreas, liver, and kidney of STZtreated,
gamma-irradiated, and STZ-treated-gammairradiated
rats.
Streptozotocin (60mg/Kg) was administered
intraperitoneally. Gamma-irradiation was performed by
whole body exposure to 6Gy from a Cesium-137 source.
GABA was administered daily via gavages (200
mg/Kg/day) during 3 weeks. Animals were sacrificed 24
hrs post the last dose of GABA.
Experimental animals were randomly divided into 8
groups of 10 rats each and treated in parallel:
1. Control: Normal healthy rats administered 1ml
distilled water daily during 3 weeks via gavages.
2. GABA: Normal healthy rats administered GABA
(200 mg/Kg body weight/day) daily during 3 weeks via
gavages.
3. DM: STZ-treated rats administered 1ml distilled
water daily during 3 weeks via gavages.
