MONITORING WATER QUALITY (FOR IRRIGATION) OF DIFFERENT SOURCES IN DELTA REGION, EGYPT

Abstract

Water samples "ere taken li•orn the Rosetta and Damietta Nile branches. as well as each of three i1Tigation canals of i'vlahmodiya. 13ahr ivloiccc . and lsmailia. Samples were also taken from three drains of Edko (nearby Mahmodiya), llanut (nearby Bahr Moiece) and Mahsama (nearby Ismailia), and from four water wells used for supplemental irrigation. All canals, drains, and wells are in the Nile Delta area. Analysis of pH, salinity. and soluble ions were carried out on all samples. Samples were bimonthly from the two Nile branches. monthly from the 3 canals and their 3 associated drains during 1995.water. samples were also taken occasionally from 4 wells with no definite systPm • Salinity hazards were non-existent for water of the Nile branches as well as at the heads of the canals (EC < 0.39 dS m• 1 ). • Sodicity and magnesium hazards were of no consequence at the Nile branches and canal heads with maximum values of SAR. Adj SAR, and SSP of 1.60, 1.62 and 44 respectively. There was no chloride hazards either. Canal waters downstream contained more salts. and greater values of sodicity parameters, and chlorides.
