Evaluation of Serum:Leptin In Patients ;- With Ulcerative Colities

Mohamed Hassan Mohamed Belal;

Abstract

The protein product of the obesity gene, obesity protein or leptin, is secreted into the circulation by adipose cells. A rising concentration of circulating leptin with increasing adiposity is proposed to serve as a negati ve feedback signal to the hypothelamus of the brain, resulting in decreased food intake, increased energy expenditure and return of body weight towards a predetermined set point.

Ulcerativer colitis is one of the inflammatory bowel diseases which is an idiopathic chronic inflammation affecting the colon. The predominant symptom of this disease is bloody diarrhea, weight loss and anorexia is also an accompanied symptom. Inspite of a successf ul symptomatic medical treatment for the chronic dianhea in patients with ulcerative colitis was achieved these patients were still failing to gain weight. Which confirm the presence of an another alternative cause of weight loss in these patients.
In our study we t1ied to find a conel ation between the serum leptin level and degree of weight loss and anorexia in patients with ulcerati ve colitis.

For this purpose we examined 25 patients w ith ulcerative colities af ter prooving the existance of th e disease by colnoscopy and biobsy from the affected part of the colon (patient group).

20 healthy indivdiuals were also examined as a control group.
