Antimicrobial Hydrogel from Residues of Olive Oil Industry

Sawsan Dacrory Mohamed Ali;

Abstract

Olive stone is an important solid waste produced from olive oil extraction process, and it is considered a renewable resource biomass. It consists principally of cellulose, lignin, and hemicelluloses.
In the first part cellulose was extracted from raw material (olive stone) by pulping process with NaOH followed by bleaching treatment with sodium chlorite (NaClO2). Bleached pulp sample was characterized by determination of (ash, lignin, pentoses, and α-cellulose). Bleached sample converted to carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). Both of cellulose and CMC were characterized by using FTIR, SEM, and XRD.
In the second part Cellulose and CMC prepared from seed and husk were reacted with Acryl amide (Am) by grafting process in presence of N, N Methylene bis-acrylamide (MBAm) as cross linker and ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as initiator with studying react
