Abstract

This study was carried out at National blood transfusion of Damanhour city.
On hundred subjects were included in this study, they were divided into two groups:
Group 1: 50 subjects who are first time blood donors. They were 38 males and 12 females with age ranges from17 -55 years.
Group 2: 50 subjects who are frequent blood donors. They were 37 males and 13 females with age ranges from 21 -47 years.
Subjects included in the study were voluntary blood donors who were completely free from any disease as hypertension, or diabetes mellitus.
All subjects were subjected to the following:
5. Full medical history to select healthy subjects.
6. Blood group.
7. Rh factor.
8. Complete blood cell count.

The result revealed the following:
There is no significant difference between two studied groups as regarding age, gender and residence.
And there is no significant difference between two groups regarding blood group and Rh.
For laboratory finding there is significant difference between two groups regarding Hb, MCHC, and monocyte count.
On the other hand there is significantly difference between two studied groups as regarding RBCs count, Hct, PCV, MCH, WBCs count, and platelet count.
Anaemia mainly due to iron deficiency is highly prevalent among blood donors especially regular blood donors. Thus, every effort should be done to increase awareness of importance of blood donation, encourage it among regular people and discourage acceptance of frequent paid blood donors. In addition, every effort should be taken to ensure the health of blood donors by adding investigations as ferritin in the screening of donors.
Regular blood donation may have an effect on other blood parameters such as WBCs. Further studies are needed to clarify these effects and its importance.
