Marwa Mohamed Shibl Biltagy;

Abstract

The issue of determining optimal schooling level has recently gained a lot of importance and attention in the field of economics. It has attracted several
economists including Nobel Prize winner Gary Becker. The main objective of this thesis is to provide an economic analysis of a human capital model in order to specify the optimal schooling level and its determinants in Egypt. The economic analysis will be supported by a review of the literature on human capital investment models with special emphasis on the optimal level of schooling investment. The data used in the analysis is obtained from the ELMPS (2006) on males and females whose ages range from 15 to 64 years old.

The thesis is divided into three chapters, excluding the introduction and conclusion. Chapter one presents the theoretical framework of knowledge and human capital formation. It proposes the definition of quality of education and its relation to the optimal1evel of schooling. Moreover, it introduces a literature review on human capital investment models.

Chapter two proposes alternative models of human capital that explain the procedure of determining optimal schooling level, for instance, the analysis of Southwick and Zionts (1974}, the analysis of Lang and Ruud (1986) and the analysis of Ramcharan (2004). Furthermore, this chapter presents the analysis of Regan et a!. (2006}, its framework, estimation methods and results.
