Abstract


Umbilical cord blood has been investigated as an attractive source for haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Human umbilical cord blood transplantation is simple and effective procedure with no risk to the donor. No need for general anaethesia or blood replacement and no discomfort is
caused.


In this study 23 samples UBC were collected from women with single full term pregnancy who gave informed consent at the time of administration to obstetric and gynecology department of Ain Shams University Hospital. Twenty-one, samples were collected from cesarian section and two collected from normal deliveries. Using two to three 60 ml syringes containing 6 ml ACD. Cord blood samples were collected by Syringe method in which blood was collected by aspiration from umbilical cord while the placenta was still in utero and further aspiration after the placenta was delivered and
held by an assistant.




The average birth weight was 3.2 Kg, ranged from 2.5 to
3.9 Kg. The mean volume of UBC collected was 81 ml ranged from 50 to 113 ml. The mean total nucleated cells count per cord blood was 10.9 x 108 ranged from 3 to 17.5 .The mean
number of mononuclear cells was 3.98x106 per ml, ranged from
1 to 6.3 x 106 . The mean CD34% measured by flowcytometry
