BONE GROWTH
Saleh Refaat Saleh;
Abstract
Bone development occurs either by intramembranous or intracartilagenous ossification . Endochondral derived bones grow m width by membranous ossification through appositional bone growth from the periosteum, also, membrane derived bones may undergo subsequent growth and elongation through endochondral ossification at growth plate.
Growth of bone is subjected to many factors including
growth factors, hormonal, dietery, local factors... etc.
. ''
The most important of these are the growth factors which are polypeptides present in the organic bone matrix and stimurat:h1 bone growth and mineralization. Currently, many growth factors are under continuous work and trials to prepare recombinent human forms to be commercially available for clinical use. Their use in treatment of non-united fractures, spinal fusion techniques and osteoperosis will be promising in near future.
