PSYCHOLOGICAL INFLUENCES OF INTERIOR SPACES COMPONENTS

Abstract
Designers face a difficult task in predicting people preferences and
impressions and offer suitable and appropriate interiors.
It is the aim of this thesis to develop a tool that can be used by designers to help predicting users' impressions and preferences towards interior spaces.
In order to understand how people impressions are formed towards the interior spaces they deal with, the relation between man as a user and the interior as a used space is studied. This relation represents an integrated interactive process. In this process, man uses his senses to perceive the space. This is followed by a deeper stage of perception called mental perception or cognition which derives a kind of evaluation that stimulates his entire feelings and emotions. As a result a certain reaction occurs, in the form of physical behaviour manifested in physical changes in the environment in order to meet his needs, or internal behaviour called mental behaviour represented in his impressions, feelings, and moods.
Interior space components and how they are perceived and affect
people's impressions and preferences are described as modifying elements: Colours have powerful qualities influencing the totality of the interior space that is reflected on the moods and preferences of users. Light do not only allow users to see clearly the form and shape of objects, but actually light can accentuate forms, textures, and thus can induce feelings in the space. Finishing Materials give the interior space unique qualities.
