VARIATIONAL TREATMENT OF CONTINUUM ORBITALS FOR AUGER ELECTRONS EMITTED FROM NEON

Gamila Mohamed Mostafa;

Abstract

Previously, the continuum wavefunctions needed in Auger transttlon rates were evaluated using a distorted wave approximation (DWA). In the present work, the Least-Squares Variational Method (LSVM) is employed, for the ftrst time, in order to calculate the continuum wavefunctions of Auger electrons emitted from Ne atom with ls- hole as well as the corresponding Auger transition rates. The core potential seen by the electrons is evaluated on the basis of the Hartree-Fock program (HF-Fischer code). The continuum Auger wavefunction is improved iteratively. Particularly, the continuum wavefunction of Auger electrons emitted in three different configurations namely (ls 2s2s, ls 2s2p, ls 2p2p) of Ne+ are obtained and the resultant Auger transition probabilities (or rates) are compared with previous theoretical and experimental results. The resultant Auger probabilities lie between those obtained using DWA- method and the experimental ones. It is also found that the higher the order of
iteration in'' LSVM-method, the closer are the results to the
experimental rates.
