Value of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in the assessment of pediatric Autism
Somaya Alaa Eldin Mahmoud ElFiky;
Abstract
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by triad deficit: impairments in social interactions, communication deficits and repetitive stereotyped behaviors.
The underlying pathogenesis of the disorder is still unknown but several studies indicate the importance of both genetic and environmental factors in the development of autism.
The prevalence rate have been increased in the last few years, there is no explanation for this continuing increase, although improved diagnosis and environmental influences are two reasons often considered.
Autism appears to have its root in very early brain development, however, the most obvious signs and symptoms of autism tend to emerge between 2 and 3 years of age. Males tend to be more affected than females, with male to female ratio 5:1.
Recently FMRI has shown a tremendous potential as a non-invasive tool for investigating functional brain activity in some brain regions’ and connection circuits between different brain areas, which can be used as early as newly born, providing many information about the function
