Abstract

It is becoming increasingly clear that there is a need, both economically and to prevent unnecessary anxiety, tor a safe and reliable method to screen for genetic abnonnalities in the pregnant population. Existing invasive techniques such as amniocentesis & CVS all carry a small but significant and unavoidable risk to the fetus . Fetomaternal cell traffic was first recognized in 1893, when Schemol identified trophoblasts in lung capillaries of women during eclampsia.
