Cardiovascular Health Behavior and its Determinants Among School Adolescents in Alexandria

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases is considered one of fatal diseases in both developed and developing countries. It constitutes about 25 to 45% of all deaths all over the world and 20% of all deaths in Egypt.
The risk factors of cardiovascular diseases may be genetic as well as behavioral causes. The behavioral risk factors are: cigarette smoking, obesity, physical inactivity and unhealthy nutritional habits.
Adolescent period is specially important in the development of cardiovascular diseases as it is the period during which adolescents start to smoke, physical activity is markedly decreased and unhealthy nutritional habits are established.
The study was conducted aiming at detecting behavioral risk factors of cardiovascular diseases and the determinants of such behaviors among students in Alexandria governorate.
To fulfill this aim, the study was conducted on a sample of 424 preparatory and secondary students. Two preparatory and two secondary schools(one for boys and another one for girls in each level) were chosen randomly from the list of governmental schools. Two private schools containing preparatory and secondary levels (one for boys and another one for girls) were chosen randomly from list of private schools in Alexandria. One class from third preparatory grade and another one from first secondary grade were chosen randomly in each school.
