STUDY OF THE CORRELATION OF DEXA SCAN TO BONE SPECIFIC ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE IN PREVALENT HEMODIALYSIS PATIENTS
Mohamed Fawzy Alsayed Maklad;
Abstract
Our study was conducted in Ain Shams University hospitals dialysis units to study the possible correlation of DEXA Scan to Bone specific alkaline phosphatase.
On the basis of whole PTH (1/84), the 34 patients 18 males (52.94 %) and 16 females (47.06 %), receiving thrice-weekly hemodialysis sessions , were divided into 2 groups. in order to study possible correlation of DEXA scan to bone specific alkaline phosphatase in prevalent hemodialysis patients.
• Group A(High wPTH> 150 pg/ml): consisted of 24 patients (70.58%)
• Group B(Normal wPTH 75 -150 pg/ml): consistedof 10 patients (29.42%)
All candidates enrolled in this study were subjected to:Full history (including the etiology of ESRD) and physical examination.
Serum chemistries i.e. serum Ca, serum PO4, serum albumin, Hemoglobin. Serum level of intact PTH, Level of bone specific alkaline phosphatase by MicroVue BSAP immunoassay and DEXA Scanat the left femoral neck and anteroposterior lumbar vertebrae (L2-L4).
Our study showed there were no significance between-group differences in terms of age, sex, BMI, HCV serology, duration of HD and interdialytic weight gain.
Also there was no significant differencebetween-groups to laboratory data of the study population including Hb level, Albumin, corrected Calcium, Phosphorous, Bone Alkaline phosphatase. There was significant difference to iPTH. This agreed with several other studies
When we had comparison between patients divided by DEXA Scan, we found that the prevalence of Osteopenia in our study was 47% and osteoporosis was 23.5%. There was a significant difference to PO4and according to post- hoc test, this significant difference was between the osteoporosis group and osteopenia group. Also between osteoporosis group and normal group.
In addition, there was a significant difference between the groups to hemodialysis duration . By post-hoc test, this significant difference was between the osteoporosis group and osteopenia group. Also between osteoporosis group and normal group.
