Serum levels of insulin-like Growth Factor 1 in Egyptian Patients with Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism

Ahmed Maher Nafie;

Abstract

Background: Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces too much of thyroxine hormone. Hyperthyroidism can accelerate body's metabolism significantly, causing sudden weight loss, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, sweating, nervousness and irritability. Aim of the Work:Aim of To evaluate the serum levels of insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1) in hypothyroid and hyperthyroid Egyptian patients. Subjects and Methods:This study was conducted on 90 cases (30 hypothyroid, 30 hyperthyroid and 30 control) were recruited from the endocrinology outpatient clinic of Ain Shams University hospital with following inclusion criteria: Naïve patients recently diagnosed as hypothyroid and hyperthyroid. They were divided into the following groups: Group I: Included 30 naive patients with hyperthyroidism. Group II: Included 30 naive patients with hypothyroidism. Group III: Included 30 subjects as a control group. Results: statistically highly significant difference between hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and control groups regarding IGF-1 being higher in hyperthyroidism than control groups and lower in hypothyroidism than control groups. Conclusion: Among Egyptian cases, serum IGF-1 increases with hyperthyroidism & decreases with hypothyroidism. Recommendations:A study to discover the new aspects of IGF system overactivation in thyroid cancer which may be relevant to therapeutic strategies aiming to block the effects of IGF, especially in dedifferentiated and metastatic tumours that are not responsive to TSH suppression with L-thyroxine.
Key words: Hyperthyroidism, thyroxine hormone, insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1)
