EFFECT OF lRRADIATION ON SOME PROPERTIES OF LITHIUM BORATE GLASSES

RASHA MAMDOUH HUSSEIN MOHOMED;

Abstract

This thesis comprises a study of the optical, thermal and electrical properties of some lithium borate glasses. The effect of adding a third oxide such as Al2 03 or PbO or the addition of transition metal oxides (Fe203, Ti02 or V205) on the mentioned properties was investigated. The effect of exposing the studied glass to different doses of irradiation either gamma rays or neutrons were also studied.
The glasses were prepared from purely grade chemical reagents; the orthoboric acid was used to obtain boric oxide, lithium oxide was added in the form of anhydrous lithium carbonate, aluminum oxide, lead oxide, ferric oxide and titiumim oxide were added as oxides. Vanadium oxide was added as ammonium metavanadate. The glass melting was made in platinum
2% Rh crucibles, using electrically heated furnace at temperature ranging 900-1100°C ± 20°C. Annealing was carried out in a furnace at the appropriate temperature
300- 350°C and the muffle was left to cool at a rate of
30°C/h to reach the room temperature.
