ENVIRONMENTAL FATE AND TRANSPORT OF VETERINARY THERAPEUTIC AGENTS IN MANURE

FATMAALZHRAA AHMED ABDELHADY AWAD;

Abstract

The environmental fate (soil and plant matrices) of two classes of veterinary therapeutic agents, steroid hormones: 4-androstene-3,17-Dione (4-AD), 1,4 androstadiene-3,17-Dione (1,4-AD) Progestrone (Prog), and tetracycline antibiotics: Oxytetracycline (OTC), Tetracycline (TC), Chlorotetracycline (CTC) were investigated. In the current work four experiments were carried out to assess 1) occurrence of selected target compounds in four types of animal manure, 2) the residual concentrations of target compounds in a spiked soil with 1 and 2 mg kg-1 in intervals during incubation for 32 days under greenhouse conditions, 3) uptaken concentrations of target compounds by Eruca sativa from fortified soil with 1 and 2 mg kg-1 under greenhouse conditions, 4) effect of target compounds on chemical and biochemical parameters of Eruca sativa plants under greenhouse conditions. In addition to test the potential of potassium permanganate (O) as a chemical oxidation method and compost (M) as a natural method either individually or companied to get rid of the target compounds. The objectives of the present study are to evaluate the residual of steroid hormones and antibiotics in soil and their transport to plants and to study the potential change in some chemical composition of plant under target compounds, and to investigate the remediation materials using potassium permanganate and compost.
