Voiding Patterns and Urodynamic Findings before and after Surgical Repair of Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Abstract

M
illions of women annually presented to physicians complaining of symptoms related directly or indirectly to pelvic organ prolapse. Being one of the pelvic organs, and in close proximity to gynae-obstetrical procedures, the lower urinary tract is focused during pelvic organ prolapsed assessment.
The published literature about the relationship between voiding symptoms and pelvic organ prolapse, are still unsatisfactory and not enough for understanding the best approach for diagnosis and management, this raises some questions:
- Are the lower urinary tract symptoms in females with prolapse could be the sole indication for surgical intervention?
- Are the urodynamic studies capable of interpretation of the patients’ complaints?
- To what extent the surgical repair of prolapsed alone could relief the patients voiding symptoms?
We tried to evaluate this urogynaecological problem by reviewing 30 patients with anterior pelvic organ prolapse; with their main complaint is LUTS. We tried to exclude those with other co-morbidities -urological or non-urological- that can affect the urinary tract.
They were evaluated thoroughly before surgical intervention. Besides the usual preoperative investigations, patients were submitted to urodynamic assessment in the absence of any sign of infection. Patients were consented about surgical procedure, its merits and complications. They were guided for follow-up after 2 weeks and 3 monthes of intervention. Symptoms, physical examination and urodynamics ultimately performed and interpreted.
