STRATIGRAPHY AND OSTRACODA OF THE SENONIAN, PALEOCENE, AND LOWER EOCENE OF MIDDLE EGYPT

Ahmed Abd El-Rahman El-Sweify;

Abstract

The faunal study of 750 selected rock samples, and the lithological successions of THIRTEEN Middle Egypt, Late Senonian - Early Eocene, previously measured stratigraphic sections at : Gebel Edmonstone of the Dakhla Oasis; Ain Dalla section, Qor Hamra section (western scarp), El- Guss Abu Said plateau, El-Maqfi section & Pass section of the Farafra Oasis (Western Desert); the northem cliff of Wadi Um Omeiyid (Northern Eastern Desert); Wadi El-Mellaha southern cliff (southwestern Gulf of Suez); Wadi Sodmein cliff (Eastern Desert, Midway between Safaga and Quseir); Gebel Duwi & Gebel Hamadat west of Quseir of the Red Sea; eastern Nile bank Qift section, and western Nile bank Gebel Gurnah two sections opposite Luxor of the Nile Valley was made.

The samples were micropaleontologically studied mainly for their content of fossil Ostracoda, and partly for their stratigraphically confirming planktonic foraminifera. The matching Late Senonian, Paleocene and Early Eocene, nannoplankton zonations of Hay & Mohler (1961), Kerdany (1969;
1970), El-Dawoody & Barakat (1972) and El-Dawoody (1973, 1978) have also been considered. The obtained results, and the made contributions cover the aspects of lithostratigraphy, paleontology, biostratigraphy, chronoshatigraphy; paleogeography and paleoecology, and their relations to the probable geologic events during the Late Senonian, the Paleocene, and the Early Eocene at the study area.

The following is a summary review of the obtained results in the aspects of: A- Lithostratigraphy (A 1-16)
